What Ajwa dates actually are
Ajwa is a date variety grown around Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The fruit is small compared to a Medjool, dark brown to near-black once ripe, with a dry, slightly wrinkled skin. Malaysian buyers usually see it packed in 250g or 500g boxes rather than sold loose, since the fruit is soft enough to damage in open trays during shipping.
Texture and taste
Fresh Ajwa is dense and chewy, not sticky-wet like a Medjool. The flesh sits close to the seed, so there's less pulp per date, and the taste leans toward a dry caramel note with a faint smoky or roasted edge rather than straightforward sweetness. Buyers used to Safawi or Mariami often find Ajwa less sugary on first bite — that's the variety, not a sign of poor quality.
Grading and what to check before buying
Grade A Ajwa has whole, unbroken skin and a matte (not glossy-wet) surface; a glossy sheen usually means added syrup or poor drying. Reject stock with visible mould specks near the stem or a strong fermented smell — Ajwa should smell faintly toasted, not sour. Kedai Kurma and a handful of other importers bring in Ajwa through Jeddah air freight, which keeps transit time under a week and the fruit firmer on arrival than sea-freight stock.
Storage
Keep Ajwa in an airtight container in the fridge — the low moisture content means it lasts 6–9 months chilled versus a few weeks at room temperature in Malaysia's humidity. Freezing works too and doesn't noticeably change the texture once thawed. Take out only what you'll eat within a few days; repeated fridge-to-counter cycles speed up sugar crystallisation on the skin.
